Which Refinery and Chemical Equipment Uses Super Duplex 2507?
Super Duplex 2507 is used in some of the most corrosion-demanding parts of refinery, petrochemical, chemical-processing and oil-and-gas systems. However, specifying “2507 stainless steel” alone is not enough for an industrial purchase.
A heat-exchanger manufacturer may require UNS S32750 tubing and plate, while a refinery piping contractor may need pipe, forged flanges and butt-weld fittings made to completely different ASTM product specifications.
The practical purchasing question is therefore:
which process equipment may use Super Duplex 2507, and which raw-material form and specification should be ordered for each component?
This guide maps refinery and chemical equipment to the relevant 2507 product forms, ASTM specifications and RFQ information required by an industrial stainless steel supplier.
Quick Answer: Which Products Can Be Made From Super Duplex 2507?
Where the actual process environment justifies Super Duplex S32750, the alloy may be considered for components such as:
- heat-exchanger tubes
- heat-exchanger plates and tubesheets
- condenser components
- process piping
- chloride-containing utility piping
- pressure-vessel shells and heads
- chemical process vessels
- forged flanges
- forged valve components
- butt-weld elbows, tees and reducers
- scrubber and desulfurization components
- pump and valve parts
- shafts and other highly loaded mechanical components
- seawater-handling systems
- selected high-chloride refinery process systems
The final selection must be based on the actual chloride concentration, temperature, pH, acid concentration, H2S exposure, oxygen level, pressure, crevice conditions, fabrication procedure and applicable design code.
Why Is Super Duplex 2507 Considered for Severe Process Environments?
Super Duplex 2507, commonly designated UNS S32750, combines a ferritic-austenitic duplex microstructure with relatively high chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen contents.
Compared with conventional austenitic grades such as 316L and standard duplex grades such as 2205, S32750 can provide greater resistance to chloride-induced pitting, crevice corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking in many severe process environments.
The grade also has high mechanical strength, which can provide design advantages in pressure-containing and mechanically loaded equipment. This does not mean that thinner material can automatically be substituted into an existing design. Any wall-thickness reduction must be supported by the applicable pressure code, design calculations, corrosion allowance and fabrication requirements.
Super Duplex 2507 is particularly relevant when chloride concentration and temperature move beyond the practical corrosion envelope of lower-alloy stainless steels.

JUDE Steel Super Duplex 2507 material page.
2507 Grade Designations and ASTM Product Standards
“2507” is a commonly used commercial grade name. A purchase order should identify the actual material designation and the product specification.
| System / Product Form | Common Designation | Procurement Note |
|---|---|---|
| Common grade name | Super Duplex 2507 | Commercial grade description; not a complete purchasing specification |
| UNS | S32750 | Primary UNS designation |
| ES | 1.4410 / X2CrNiMoN25-7-4 | Common European designation |
| JIS | SUS327L1 | Japanese counterpart; verify the applicable JIS product standard and project requirements before substitution |
| Plate, sheet and strip | ASTM A240/A240M UNS S32750 | Flat products for pressure-vessel and general applications |
| Tube | ASTM A789/A789M UNS S32750 | Ferritic/austenitic stainless steel tubing |
| Pipe | ASTM A790/A790M UNS S32750 | Seamless and welded duplex stainless steel pipe |
| Forged flange / valve component | ASTM A182/A182M F53 | F53 is associated with UNS S32750 for forged pressure components |
| Wrought butt-weld fitting | ASTM A815/A815M WP-S32750 | Common for elbows, tees and reducers |
| Bar / machined component | ASTM A276 or ASTM A479 UNS S32750 | Confirm the standard required by the finished component or pressure application |
For flat material, ASTM A240/A240M covers stainless steel plate, sheet and strip for pressure vessels and general applications. Buyers should always specify both the standard and UNS grade rather than writing only “2507 plate.”
The current scope of ASTM A240 can be reviewed through
ASTM International.
ASTM A240 UNS S32750 Chemical Composition
The following values are specification limits for ASTM A240 UNS S32750 flat products. They should not be confused with an individual producer’s typical heat analysis.
| Elemento | ASTM A240 UNS S32750, wt.% |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.030 max. |
| Manganese (Mn) | 1.20 max. |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.035 max. |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.020 max. |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.80 max. |
| Chromium (Cr) | 24.0–26.0 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 6.0–8.0 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 3.0–5.0 |
| Nitrogen (N) | 0.24–0.32 |
| Copper (Cu) | 0.50 max. |
Nominal descriptions such as approximately 25% chromium, 7% nickel, 4% molybdenum and around 0.3% nitrogen are useful for describing the alloy family, but they are not a substitute for the specification limits and the actual mill test certificate.
PREN is also a calculated parameter rather than a fixed chemical element. A commonly used formula is:
PREN = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N
Typical S32750 chemistry produces a PREN in the low-40 range. If a project requires a specific minimum PREN, that requirement should be stated explicitly in the purchase specification rather than assumed from the commercial name “2507.”
Which Refinery and Chemical Equipment Uses Super Duplex 2507?
1. Heat Exchangers and Condensers
Heat exchangers are among the most relevant applications for Super Duplex 2507 in refinery and chemical-processing plants.
S32750 may be considered when the cooling or process side contains high chloride levels, seawater, chlorinated seawater, acidic chloride contamination or another environment in which 316L or standard duplex 2205 does not provide sufficient corrosion margin.
Depending on the exchanger design, 2507 can be evaluated for:
- heat-exchanger tubes
- tubesheets
- shell sections
- channel components
- heads
- nozzles
- other wetted components
The raw material specification depends on the component. Tubes may be ordered under ASTM A789 UNS S32750, while tubesheets and pressure-retaining flat sections may require ASTM A240 S32750 plate.
Super Duplex 2507 is particularly well established in heat exchangers using seawater or highly chloride-containing cooling water and in demanding petrochemical and chemical services.
For independent technical background, see the
Alleima SAF 2507 technical datasheet.
2. High-Chloride Process Piping
Process piping is another important application for UNS S32750.
In refining and chemical processing, chloride contamination can create localized-corrosion and stress-corrosion-cracking risks that are substantially different from those in ordinary utility piping.
A complete S32750 piping system may include:
- seamless pipe
- welded pipe
- elbows
- tees
- reducers
- forged flanges
- valve components
- branch components
Pipe may be ordered to ASTM A790 UNS S32750. Wrought butt-weld fittings are commonly specified under ASTM A815 WP-S32750, while forged flanges and selected forged valve components may be specified as ASTM A182 F53.
3. Pressure Vessels and Chemical Process Vessels
ASTM A240 S32750 plate may be used in selected pressure vessels and process vessels when the process chemistry and pressure-design requirements justify a super duplex material.
Possible fabricated components include:
- vessel shells
- heads
- tubesheets
- internal wetted components
- nozzle components
- reinforcement parts
The pressure-vessel designer must confirm the applicable ASME or other design-code requirements. The high strength of S32750 can provide engineering benefits, but the permitted design stress, minimum thickness, weld details and corrosion allowance remain code-controlled.
For flat-product sourcing, review JUDE Steel’s
stainless steel sheet and plate supply range.
4. Flanges, Valves and Forged Pressure Components
Super Duplex 2507 is widely associated with highly loaded, corrosion-resistant piping components.
Potential products include:
- weld-neck flanges
- blind flanges
- forged fittings
- valve bodies
- bonnets
- forged rings
- high-strength pressure components
ASTM A182 Grade F53 is commonly used for forged UNS S32750 components. Buyers should still specify dimensional standards, pressure class, heat-treatment condition, testing requirements and any project-specific supplementary requirements.
5. Elbows, Tees and Reducers
Wrought Super Duplex fittings are required when a process piping system needs corrosion resistance through the entire pressure boundary rather than only in straight pipe.
ASTM A815 WP-S32750 may apply to:
- 90-degree elbows
- 45-degree elbows
- equal tees
- reducing tees
- concentric reducers
- eccentric reducers
- caps
The purchase order should also identify dimensions, wall thickness or schedule, fitting class and applicable NDE requirements.
6. Scrubbers and Desulfurization Equipment
Gas-cleaning and desulfurization systems can expose equipment to wet chloride-containing, acidic or otherwise corrosive condensates.
Super Duplex 2507 may therefore be evaluated for selected:
- scrubber piping
- reheater tubes
- absorber-related components
- circulation piping
- corrosion-resistant wetted sections
Actual alloy selection should be based on the gas chemistry, liquid chemistry, chloride concentration, operating temperature and anticipated deposits or crevice conditions.
7. Pumps, Shafts and Mechanical Components
The high mechanical strength of S32750 also makes it relevant to components that are simultaneously exposed to high mechanical load and aggressive process fluids.
Examples can include:
- pump shafts
- valve stems
- couplings
- rings
- machined discs
- selected fasteners
- other machined corrosion-resistant components
Bar or forged stock may be specified depending on the geometry and design requirements of the finished component.
8. Seawater and Chloride-Contaminated Utility Systems
Refineries, petrochemical complexes and offshore processing facilities may use seawater for cooling, firewater, injection or other utility systems.
Warm seawater, chlorinated seawater and stagnant crevice conditions are particularly demanding for stainless steels.
S32750 may therefore be evaluated for:
- seawater cooling piping
- heat-exchanger tubing
- high-pressure seawater systems
- pump components
- valves and flanges
- selected offshore process systems
The presence of seawater alone does not automatically define the material. Temperature, chlorination, flow velocity, crevice geometry, biological activity and operating profile should be considered.

Which Refinery Services May Justify 2507?
2507 should normally be selected because the service condition requires it, not simply because it offers higher corrosion resistance on paper.
Situations where engineers may evaluate S32750 include:
- high-chloride process streams
- seawater or chlorinated-seawater cooling
- process solutions contaminated with hydrochloric acid
- chloride-contaminated organic-acid processing
- corrosive exchanger services where standard duplex approaches its practical limit
- high-strength offshore or petrochemical piping
- selected sour environments when permitted by the applicable material standard
The presence of chlorides, acids or H2S does not by itself prove that 2507 is suitable. Concentration, temperature, water phase, pressure and fabrication condition can materially change performance.
MR0103 vs MR0175: Do Not Write Only “NACE Compliant”
Sour-service procurement is one area where vague RFQs create unnecessary technical risk.
ANSI/NACE MR0103 / ISO 17945 addresses metallic materials resistant to sulfide stress cracking in corrosive petroleum-refining and related processing environments.
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 is primarily associated with H2S-containing environments in oil and gas production.
The standards therefore address different service contexts.
A refinery purchase order should not simply state “NACE 2507.” The buyer should identify:
- the applicable sour-service standard
- the actual service environment
- material condition
- hardness restrictions
- welding requirements
- any required corrosion or qualification testing
For refinery sour-service scope, see the
AMPP ANSI/NACE MR0103 / ISO 17945 resource.
When Should 2507 Not Be Automatically Specified?
Higher alloy content does not make 2507 a universal process material.
A different material may be more appropriate when:
- the service is mild enough that 316L or 2205 already provides adequate life-cycle performance
- the process contains an acid environment outside the proven corrosion envelope of S32750
- very high service temperature creates metallurgical limitations for super duplex stainless steel
- the service requires a nickel alloy or another alloy family
- fabrication conditions cannot reliably maintain the required duplex microstructure and corrosion performance
- the project specification mandates another qualified material
Super duplex stainless steels are particularly sensitive to inappropriate thermal exposure during fabrication. Welding, hot forming and heat treatment therefore require qualified procedures.
2205 vs 2507: When Is the Upgrade Justified?
| Selection Factor | Duplex 2205 | Super Duplex 2507 |
|---|---|---|
| UNS | S32205 / S31803 | S32750 |
| Chloride corrosion resistance | High | Higher in many severe chloride environments |
| Typical PREN level | Mid-30s | Low-40s |
| Strength | High | Very high |
| Material cost | Generally lower | Generally higher |
| Fabrication control | Important | More demanding |
| Typical selection logic | Moderate to demanding chloride service | More severe chloride / seawater / corrosive process service |
The correct question is not “Is 2507 better than 2205?” but:
does the service environment require the additional corrosion margin of S32750?
For a more detailed grade comparison, see
JUDE Steel’s 2205 vs 2507 technical comparison.
What Should a Super Duplex 2507 RFQ Include?
An inquiry stating only “Please quote 2507 stainless steel” is not sufficient for a refinery or chemical-processing project.
A useful RFQ should identify:

- Dimensions: thickness, width, length, OD, wall thickness or schedule
- Quantity: pieces, meters or total weight
- Application: heat exchanger, process piping, vessel, valve, flange or other equipment
- Process medium: where material suitability must be reviewed
- Chloride concentration: if known

If the material will be used in a pressure-retaining or corrosive process component, sending the project material specification with the RFQ can significantly reduce technical clarification time.
Inspection and Documentation for 2507 Raw Material
Super Duplex procurement should focus on material traceability and the requirements of the actual project rather than only checking the grade name.
Depending on the application, incoming inspection may include:
- heat-number verification
- mill test certificate review
- chemical composition verification
- mechanical-property review
- positive material identification (PMI)
- dimensional inspection
- surface inspection
- ultrasonic examination where specified
- liquid penetrant testing where specified
- ferrite / phase-balance requirements where specified
- corrosion testing where required by the project
Additional testing should be ordered because the project requires it, not added generically to every purchase order.

Because Super Duplex 2507 is a specialized grade, buyers should confirm actual stock, production origin, dimensional range, certification and lead time for each inquiry rather than assuming that every size or product form is continuously available.
For pipe, tube, forgings or fittings, state the exact ASTM product specification so availability and sourcing can be reviewed separately from flat products.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ASTM A240 enough when ordering 2507 plate?
No. ASTM A240 identifies the flat-product specification, but the purchase order should also specify UNS S32750, dimensions, quantity, surface condition, certification and any supplementary testing required by the project.
Is ASTM A182 F53 the same material as UNS S32750?
ASTM A182 Grade F53 is the common forged-product grade designation associated with UNS S32750. ASTM A182 defines requirements for forged or rolled flanges, forged fittings, valves and related components, while other product forms use different ASTM specifications.
Which ASTM specification applies to 2507 process pipe?
ASTM A790/A790M is commonly used for seamless and welded ferritic/austenitic stainless steel pipe, including UNS S32750. Tubing is commonly specified under ASTM A789/A789M.
What specification applies to Super Duplex 2507 butt-weld fittings?
ASTM A815/A815M is commonly used for wrought ferritic/austenitic stainless steel fittings. UNS S32750 fittings may be ordered as WP-S32750 together with the required fitting class, dimensions and project-specific testing.
Can 2507 be used in sour refinery service?
It can be acceptable in defined sour environments when the applicable standard, material condition, hardness, welding procedure and actual service conditions permit its use. The commercial grade name alone does not establish sour-service compliance.
Should a refinery specify MR0103 or MR0175?
MR0103 / ISO 17945 addresses sulfide stress cracking in corrosive petroleum-refining and related processing environments. MR0175 / ISO 15156 primarily addresses H2S-containing environments in oil and gas production. The project engineer should identify the applicable standard rather than using the generic phrase “NACE compliant.”
When should I choose 2507 instead of 2205?
2507 may be justified when chloride concentration, temperature, seawater exposure, crevice conditions or other corrosion factors exceed the practical design margin of 2205. If 2205 already provides adequate performance, the additional alloying and fabrication requirements of 2507 may not provide sufficient economic benefit.
What should I send JUDE Steel for a 2507 quotation?
Send the grade, UNS designation, ASTM or EN standard, product form, dimensions, quantity, certification requirements, testing requirements and destination. For process-equipment projects, including the service medium, temperature, pressure and project material specification can reduce technical clarification time.
